NO APPARATUS FUNDING FROM COUNTY DESPITE REQUEST

Brad Creasy, Bedford's fire chief appeared in front of the Bedford County Board of Supervisors again Monday night during a public hearing on the county's proposed budget. Creasy first spoke to the board in November with a proposal to fund an aging heavy rescue with funds that traditionally would have replaced a county owned tanker. In his proposal Creasy explained that with changes in operational procedures over the past ten years the tanker was no longer needed and that in order for the county to "get the most return for their investment" the requested funding needed to be redirected to the replacement of the heavy rescue that responds throughout the county and sees a much greater use. He added that a new heavy rescue would cost upwards of $600,000 and that the volunteer fire department through donations was prepared to finance the remaining balance. On Monday night Creasy began by saying "I've reviewed the proposed operating budget and capital improvement projects and nowhere can I find the apparatus funding that I requested in November." Creasy went on to say "according to the proposal prepared by Mr. Rodgers there is $1.1 million dollars unappropriated in this years CIP alone. I ask that you approve the requested funding at your next stated meeting and do your part to help us protect the community." The Bedford Volunteer Fire Department covers a first due response area of 194 square miles and responds to an average of 900 emergencies each year. ...
