LODD: ROCKY MOUNT FIRE CHIEF AND SENIOR FIREMAN INVOLVED IN ACCIDENT WHILE RESPONDING TO WORKING FIRE; BOTH SUSTAIN FATAL INJURIES
Monday, July 26, 2010
-
Rocky Mount Fire Department Chief Posey Dillon and Senior Firefighter Danny Altice were both killed in the line of duty today while responding to a working fire in the Penhook area of Franklin County. According to State Police, Wagon 1A; a 1988 Pierce pumper driven by Chief Dillon, was struck in the side by a 2007 Ford Escape while responding through the intersection of Route 40 East  and School Board Road. Both men were thrown from the apparatus which rolled several times after striking the roads curb. The truck came to rest on top of a 2000 Ford Mustang but the driver of that vehicle was not seriously injured. The officers and members of the Bedford Fire Department wish to extend our deepest sympathy to the families, friends, and fellow firefighters of these two fallen brothers. Funeral arrangements will be posted as available.

FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN; DON'T LIKE HARD WORK? RUN BOYS, RUN
Friday, July 2, 2010
-
1126hrs- Company 1 units (Brush 1 w/ two, Utility 1 w/ four, Support 1 w/ two, and Tanker 1 w/ two) responded to reports of smoke at Sharp Top Mountain. Brush 1 reported the same and established a unified command with National Park Service representatives. All apparatus staged at the Nature Center until crews reconned the site to determine how to access the difficult to reach fire. FF John "Roc" Moore and FF Steve "Beeker" Curry were assigned as the sawyer and swamper and worked for over five hours cutting mountain laurel to make a path into the fire. 1600 feet of forestry line was laid and pumped from the top of the bus trail where Brush 1 was located to the top of the summit (the reason Brush 1 is equipped with high pressure pump). Command requested more manpower to relieve the crew of ten at 1415hrs but only recieved the assistance of Company 2 (Big Island) who sent three firefighters to assist. Command ordered all operations be stopped at 1900hrs for the night. All personnel enjoyed the seafood buffet at the Peaks of Otter Lodge before returning to quarters. Engine 1 (with four), Brush 9 (with two) and Manpower 9 (with three) staffed Station 1 while units operated on the mountain. Total Company 1 personnel: 15.
